Why do some businesses and communities
watch themselves self-destruct when faced with an evolving
environment?
The answer lies in our limbic system
(fight / flight) which overrides our neo-cortex (management
/ reason) when we feel fearful.
Last weekend two United States Congressional
candidates attended a private Alpha Presencesm session
to improve their persuasion and presentation abilities
- in order to persuade their voters to entertain radical
solutions to persistent problems.
They learned APIP (Alpha Presence Integrity Persuasion).
Here is how it works:
Step One: First,
behind every question and discussion involving significant
change there is fear. The first task it to identify
the fear. In a conversation or Q&A session, you
can ask the person what they fear most about their
current situation or the proposed change. If giving
a speech, you can:
- Tell a story
about the fears of someone similar to the audience.
- Repeat a discussion where
these fears were described to you.
- Make a good guess about their fear
and ask for confirmation.
Step Two: Next, you can ask or state
their hopes or dreams (the opposite side of the fear).
For example, if the person is afraid that they will
lose their job because of the change, describe their
dream, working at a place they love. Be vivid.
Step Three: Identify
the current political / work / community situation
and ask if it adequately addresses their fears or
their hopes as it is now structured. Ask THEM if
their dreams are being fulfilled. Ask THEM if they
believe more of the same will address the fears they
harbor. If this is an issue of concern, the answer
is usually "no." You
can now identify some aspect of the current situations
as a cause of the problem.
Notice: As of this point, you haven't
blasted them with positions, arguments or details
which would trigger their "limbic fear system." You
have just honed in on who they are and what they
fear and hope. Your understanding of what they fear
allows them to invite you behind their defenses.
Step Four: Now you
can, with
integrity , describe how your change makes their
dream possible by fixing their problem. Put your
listeners in the picture. Let all the passion you
have pour out as you build their dream with them
in vivid detail.
Step Five: Objections are now turned
into problems that can be solved together as partners
looking for creative solutions as you build your new
world together.
